Firstly, I just found out that it's better to have a Visa credit/debit card, since I guess MasterCard's are no longer accepted at Seven Eleven ATMs, though from the little research I've done, it looks like they're working on making them work there again. However, MasterCard's still work at post office ATMs, but the only problem with that are their hours. I guess I'll have to make it work somehow, though. Oh, but I was looking at other ways to access my money (in the all-knowing JCMU handbook; it seriously has everything in there, if not the little details I always want to know...For that, I thank he JCMU staff again for being patient with me in my many visits and phone calls inquiring about everything). The other easiest (if not fastest) way is through money orders, which can be done at the post office, I think. So there are options, at least. But hopefully I'll have time to just use the post office ATM. I'll probably write more about all this stuff once I've actually been in Japan and have done these things, instead of just having to speculate, research, and comment.
As for the Gilman scholarship, an opportunity has already arisen. They are partnering with the Reach the World program and have given recently awarded Gilman scholars the opportunity to apply for this fall semester program in which, if accepted, you will be paired with a disadvantaged youth that is in one of various programs in New York. They will follow your blog on the Reach the World website--which needs to be updated at least twice a week--and you must Skype with hem up to three times in the semester. As they said, it's a great way to gain media and journalism experience, and it's a great opportunity for those students one will correspond with. Also, it could replaced your follow-on project for the scholarship. Still, I think it would just be an all-around great experience for both parties, and I think it's really cool that an elementary or junior high or high school student could follow my blog and learn from it.
And it'd probably look good on my résumé. And like I said, it's a great learning experience for everyone involved. The deadline is this Monday, so I need to finish up the application, probably today.
Well, and I just had coffee and am feeling motivated (and happier) right now. I'm gonna get a lot done today. I'll also do my best on that application, because he more I think about it, the more I really hope I get accepted. It is pretty competitive, though...But so was the Gilman scholarship, and I was lucky enough to receive I that. Thank you, both JCMU and the Gilman, for giving me so many wonderful opportunities! Though there are still 15 days until any of them finally begin. Anyway, that's all I wanted to say for now.
